  • Store fabric items like clothing, curtains, and drapes on hangers.
  • If hanging cartons aren’t available, fold and store in dresser drawers or cedar chests along with bedding and linens.

🚲 Tires

  • Check tire pressure and inspect for dry rot.
  • Cover any tires that will be exposed to the elements.

🧊 Appliances

  • Thoroughly dry refrigerators or freezers; store with doors slightly open.
  • Make a note if you place any items inside appliances.
  • Boxes can be stacked on top of stoves, refrigerators, and freezers.
  • Ensure stoves and cooking equipment are clean and dry before packing.

🔋 Batteries

  • Remove batteries from appliances and store in a cool, dry place.
  • Periodically test and charge batteries if needed.

🍽️ Dishes and Glassware

  • Place packing material at the bottom and top of boxes.
  • Individually wrap each dish and glass; nest cups and bowls together.
  • Stand plates, saucers, and platters on their edge.
  • Fill empty pockets with packing paper.
  • Label all boxes containing glassware; avoid placing heavy items on top.

🛋️ Furniture

  • Place a pallet, cardboard mat, or plastic sheet on the floor before placing furniture.
  • Stand sofas and mattresses on end if possible.
  • Disassemble beds and tables; wrap table legs in paper.
  • If a table cannot be disassembled, place padding on the floor and store upside down.
  • Use dresser tops for stacking cartons and drawers for small or delicate items.
  • Keep upholstery off the floor; cover furniture with a light cotton sheet.
  • Stack lightweight chairs seat-to-seat or upside down on tables that cannot be disassembled.

📚 Books and Documents

  • Pack books flat to protect the spines.
  • Do not place boxes directly on concrete floors; use pallets.
  • Do not pack fragile items with books.

  • Clean metal tools and wipe with a rag containing a few drops of machine oil to prevent rust.
  • Clean, lightly oil, and tie long-handled tools like rakes, shovels, and hoes in bundles.

  • Gather all packing materials (cartons, paper, bubble wrap, tape, furniture covers) before moving.
